In this episode, N4AL’s Adron Buske talks with Robin Linn, Artist Manager for pre-visualization studio The Third Floor.
Pre-visualization, or “previs”, is the process of visualizing and improving a film project before the actual filming takes place. It’s the next step beyond storyboarding. The Third Floor will create a full animatic of scenes before a movie goes into production. This helps plan ahead for camera angles, CGI development, and the pacing of the visual storytelling. Pre-Viz uses computer animation to do a lot of that work quickly and inexpensively, saving time and budget during full production.
The Third Floor’s impressive portfolio includes work on The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Total Recall, Oblivion and Skyfall.
Our guest, Robin, has only been with the Third Floor since December 2013. But his background of work in animation, art direction, sculpting, 3-D character modeling and teaching spans 25 years with companies like Hanna-Barbera, Sony Pictures, Reel FX and Loyola Marymount University. However, he started as a bank manager who only did sculpting as a hobby. Learn how a chance opportunity turned into over two decades in the film industry.
